White Fang (Jack London-1906)- The classic story of a domesticated dog who fights for survival in the Alaskan wilderness.
The Sea Wolf (Jack London- 1904)- A refined man from the city finds himself on a sailing ship under the control of a crazy captain.
Esperanza Rising (Pam Munoz Ryan- 2000)- Esperanza's idyllic life in Mexico ends with a sudden tragedy. She and her mother are forced to leave their upper-class life behind and seek out a new beginning working in the fields of California.
Historical Fiction:
Bud, Not Buddy (Christopher Paul Curtis-1999)- Bud, an orphan, tries to keep himself safe and fed in the great depression, while using the only thing his mom left him (a flyer for a jazz band) to try to track his family down.

Animal Farm (George Orwell-1945)- In this allegory, a group of barnyard animals serve as representatives of the major players in the Russian Revolution of the early 20th century.
The Selection (Kiera Cass-2012)- In a future world where a caste system dictates your lot in life, American Singer has a chance to change her future by winning a contest to marry a prince. However, in order to do so she will have to leave her true love behind.

The Bane Chronicles (Candace Clare-2014)- This series follows the adventures of the Warlock Magnus Bane. Bane is immortal and he gets involved in many historical events.
